On the Johnson Plantation, the slaves are treated fairly for the most part.  This helps to keep them in line.  What REALLY keeps them in line though, is that they know that their owner is an extreme sadist.  His punishment room is universally feared by the slaves on the Plantation.  Slaves who fuck up badly are sent there.  Most never come back and those that do are irrevocably changed in some way.
